The Kiwanis Club of Algiers hosted the New Orleans Inspector General, Derry Harper, at their weekly meeting. Mr Harper gave the club an overview of his career and an outlined the mission and functions of his office plus the areas of responsibility that he oversees.

Algiers Kiwanis Club participated in the Kiwanis Club of New Orleans sponsored project to paint ceiling tiles for the clinic and hospital areas of Children’s Hospital.  Several area Kiwanis Clubs worked to complete ceiling tiles in a two hour workshop. 

 Col Chris Schlafer, (Marine Corps, RET) and current Commandant of the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy, gave the Kiwanis Club of Algiers an update on the many a achievements and honors that Westbank school has garnered since its beginning in 2011.  Known in the community as NOMMA, the type 2 charter school located in Orleans Parish on the campus of Federal City in Algiers. is the largest school in the nation that will have a Marine JROTC unit that will include its new 8th grade beginning this August.

Custanza, Executive Director of CRIMESTOPPERS, speak to the club about the importance of staying safe and precautions to take to prevent from becoming a victim of crime. 
The club also present Crimestoppers with a donation to assist in their efforts.

The Kiwanis Club of Algiers was treated to a very interesting program from Sugar Root Farm, located on the lower coast of Algiers. It is a non-profit farm that has as it’s mission, educating and promoting farm-to-fork information with hands on learning and demonstrations.   Teaching the children and adults of the greater New Orleans area how to feed themselves by using their sustainable, free range farm model.

​Karr Key Club ​​took time out on Saturday, August 25th to participate in a drive to collect food and clothes at Berean Presbyterian Church. Items collected were distributed to people in need in a nearby neighborhood.

Recent Speakers, New Members and Award Recipients

Sally Ann Roberts, retired WWL-TV reporter and celebrity, inspired and delighted the Kiwanis Club of Algiers with comments about her life, family and career.  All in attendance at the club’s weekly meeting were also very interested to hear about her foundation,  “Each One Save One”.

Jerry Forstall, plant manager at Chalmette Refinery, spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Algiers at their weekly meeting. He gave a very interesting overview of the Refinery as well as a short synopsis of its history and then brought everyone up to date on work that they are able to do currently.

The Kiwanis Club of Algiers members were treated to a short concert at their weekly meeting by two very talented musicians from the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra. The Youth Orchestra was presented with a donation from the club to encourage these amazing performers. Academy of Our Lady/ Shaw Key Club teamed up with Kiwanis for a Mothers' Day Dinner at Woldernberg Retirement Home. The Key Club made cards for the mother residents and served them dinner. The Kiwanians made several delicious dishes for the dinner. Live music was also present, and gave spirit to the room. 

The Kiwanis Club awarded its Key Club Leadership scholarship to Jenna Arnold(center) from Academy of Our Lady at their weekly Thursday meeting. Shirley Spedale, youth services chairman(L) and Judi Zimmermann(R), Kiwanis Key Club advisor for the Academy.
